Evolution - Part 19

Nyota was to be a self-sustaining and life nurturing city. A city that fostered cooperation and altruism across all living things on earth.  Nyota would finally bring all living organisms to cooperate instead of fight each other for resources on a never ending survival of the fittest game.  Nyota was to accelerate the evolutionary path the universe has defined for life as a whole.

And so the work began. Energy for the city would only be produced by harnessing existing sources that do no harm.  Nyota would use electricity as its clean and single source of power for light, heating, cooling, transportation, food production, and also entertainment.  This electricity would be converted from available energy sources with no or minimal impact on its source.

All water, feeding, and energy systems in Nyota were to be built following a full-feedback-loop model were the waste from one step becomes the resource for the next and, at the end, the waste from the last step becomes the resource for the first.

Solar energy already reaches earth in abundant quantities but it will need to be harvested intelligently as to not impact the plant world that feeds on it.  Solar panels would have to be made of natural mineral materials so they can be returned, at the end of their lives, to the soil.  Geothermal energy is already there in the middle of the earth but it will also need to be harvested carefully as to not create imbalances in the earth's core and magnetic fields that could cause bigger problems like floods or earthquakes.

Food production will also be done in with minimal impact in multi-story green house towers that provide exactly the right amount of nutrients, light, and water harvested from the environment and returned to it when their cycle completes.

There will be a minimal standard of living for all inhabitants of Nyota so there will be no poverty or hunger.  Nyota will ensure that everybody gets a minimum level of housing, food, education, healthcare, and leisure.  This social foundation would allow the inhabitants of Nyota to freely pursue their wide variety of evolutionary interests and "purpose" as they slowly discover what they are.

All economic activity will be under a free market model with private property rights so inhabitants are free to pursue their interests, make money at will, and to work as hard or as little as they desired.  However, in this free market model, Nyota will always provide strong oversight and regulations to ensure all economic activity always stays equitable and true to the self-sustaining and life-nurturing goals of the city.

The word about Nyota and the members of its governing body, those allowed into the Study, began to spread around the world.  People were wondering who these people were and how they had managed to secure the money to be able to undertake such an ambitious project.  And, as the word spread, all the people that have benefited and enriched themselves by slowly destroying the planet began to worry.

And so the oil industry began to understand that if this project was to be successful, the extraction, processing, and burning of fossil fuels would eventually end.

The corrupt politicians realized that there would be nobody to offer them bribes to allow them to continue exploiting and destroying the environment at will for profit.  Things like timber, mining, and chemical companies would also disappear.

The defense industry saw the end of all wars.  When people are finally able to live in a world that allows them to meet all their basic needs and pursue whatever each person discovers their purpose to be the need for wars and weapons and destruction and death would all go away.

The plastics industry realized the their days were numbered also.  The consumption driven world would probably end.  The agricultural industry realized that their current practices of flooding the world with toxic pesticides, polluting fertilizers, and proprietary seeds would soon be exposed as a blatant attempt to enrich themselves at the expense of the environment.  Farmers would realize how they had been manipulated and enslaved by these interests in the pursuit of destructive policies that they were unaware of.

The pharmaceutical and health care industry began to realize that when people are able to reduce stress, sleep more, eat good food devoid of pollutants and chemicals, spend more time with family and friends, and doing what the universe meant for each to be doing, disease and imbalances would greatly disappear.

They realized that the world would finally realize how they have created a vicious circle by manufacturing medicines that caused temporary fixes, but created havoc and imbalances in other areas in the body, which in turn created the need for more medicines and health care.  They realized the world soon would re-discover the fact that the human body, when left alone, is the best fighter of disease.

Even criminal syndicates understood that the laws prohibiting certain activities like smuggling, contraband, human exploitation, drugs from which they profited would eventually disappear when the world went back to the balance the universe calls for.

But this period was not meant to be the end of everything, it was meant to be a period of renewal and realignment.  New self-sustaining pursuits and industries would be born and flourish.  Things like renewable energy production and engineering, materials development, green house farming, genetics based medicine and health care, and, the biggest one of all, space exploration.

Was the next evolutionary step for humankind to begin expanding to other areas of the universe?
